The nickname dates back to the 1800s, when working-class residents of North Melbourne — many of them labourers and slaughterhouse workers — were known as "shinboners" for surviving on the cheapest cuts of meat, including the shin bone. It became a badge of honour: tough, gritty, never-say-die. That Shinboner Spirit has defined the club ever since, from Arden Street Est. 1869 right through to today.
